Knowing that youth are the future of our sport, Equestrian Canada (EC), with the generous support of Mark Samuel, Kevin Sanford and the Samuel-Sanford family, is pleased to announce the 2023 recipients of the Jumping Youth Bursary.
The bursary was developed to support young athletes competing in hunter, jumper and equitation divisions striving to continue their education while competing at high levels of equestrian sport. Riders are selected by the Youth Bursary Committee based on academic achievement; equestrian-related results and goals; commitment and dedication to jumping sport; and demonstrated financial need.
The following athletes have each been awarded $2,000 through the Jumping Youth Bursary in recognition of their hard work and dedication:
Sierra Baker‘s lifelong passion for horses traces back to her earliest memories of riding on her grandma’s horse at her grandparent’s farm. With both parents sharing her love for riding during their own upbringing, Sierra’s journey into the equestrian world was a natural progression. Despite briefly exploring other sports, Sierra’s heart belonged to horses, leading her to dedicate herself fully to riding. Currently in grade 11, Sierra balances her academic pursuits with her equestrian ambitions, fueled by her dream of becoming a veterinarian. Alongside her academic goals, Sierra cherishes her three horses, each playing a unique role in her journey. From her first pony, Happy, who taught her perseverance and resilience in the jumper ring, to Corello GE, a beloved partner in navigating the 1.10m jumps, and Clancy, a stallion with boundless bravery and potential, Sierra’s bond with her horses is the cornerstone of her equestrian journey. Sierra also volunteers at a horse rescue, fueling her commitment to animal welfare. Her future shines bright as she combines her love for horses with her academic and career ambitions.

Claire Coleshill‘s equestrian journey began at the age of 7 when she attended her first summer riding camp and instantly fell in love with horses. Despite dabbling in various sports like dance, skiing, and gymnastics, it was the profound connection she felt with horses that captured her heart. Inspired by her visits to watch Grand Prix riders at the Royal Winter Fair, Claire embarked on a determined path to pursue her passion for riding. With aspirations to study animal biology at university and potentially pursue a career as a veterinarian, Claire’s dedication to both her academic and equestrian pursuits shines through. Her mount, TME Zuper Star (Pete), is not just a partner in sport but also a beloved companion known for his reserved yet sweet demeanor and unwavering enthusiasm for jumping. Together, Claire and Pete epitomize the bond between rider and horse, driven by mutual trust, curiosity, and a shared love for the thrill of the arena.

Lily Elliot‘s equestrian journey began at the age of 6, inspired by her mother’s passion for riding. From her first lessons at her mother’s barn, Lily quickly fell in love with the sport. Now, she’s living her dream as a professional rider in Europe, working towards her long-term goal of competing successfully at the highest levels of the sport. With a keen focus on gaining experience in jumping bigger classes and expanding her knowledge in young horse development and training, Lily is dedicated to honing her skills and achieving excellence. Her partnership with Pesgo Adelheid Z, a talented Zangersheide gelding, has been instrumental in her journey, guiding her through numerous milestones including her first 1.40m+ classes and FEI competitions, as well as representing the gold medal young riders team at NAYC in 2023. Lily’s determination, paired with her exceptional talent and the support of her trainer, Alicia Gadban-Lewis, sets the stage for a bright future in the world of equestrian sport.

Rosalie Gagné‘s affinity for horses runs deep, beginning before she could even walk, with her first pony, “Princess Muffin,” setting the stage for a lifelong passion. Surrounded by family members who share her love for riding, Rosalie feels right at home at her grandparents’ barn, where she actively participates in caring for the horses. Despite exploring various sports like gymnastics and volleyball, Rosalie’s heart has always belonged to horses, finding solace and joy in every moment spent at the barn. Currently studying health sciences with aspirations to pursue a Doctorate of Dental Medicine, Rosalie’s ultimate goal is to become a dentist. Alongside her academic pursuits, Rosalie nurtures her equestrian dreams with her two beloved horses, Cognac Chateau Hollogne Z and Tofino BCT. Her journey with Cognac began in 2019, evolving from the 0.90m to the 1.25m level, solidifying a bond built on trust, partnership, and unwavering dedication. Tofino, with his endearing personality, swiftly captured Rosalie’s heart during the 2022 show season, becoming a cherished member of her family and a steadfast companion in achieving her equestrian goals. Through hard work, determination, and the support of her horses, Rosalie continues to pursue her dreams both in and out of the saddle, guided by a deep love for horses and a steadfast commitment to excellence.

Alyssa Gillis embarked on her equestrian journey at the age of 10, following in the footsteps of her mother, who rode during her own upbringing. Despite enjoying figure skating and golf, it was the connection with horses that captured Alyssa’s heart. Alongside her dedication to the sport, Alyssa works at Highwood Golf and Country Club, balancing her passion for riding with her professional pursuits. With plans to study Biochemistry at the University of Calgary to continue riding and competing, Alyssa aspires to become a neurosurgeon, driven by a passion for science and a desire to make a difference. Alyssa’s equestrian endeavors are fueled by her two beloved horses, Tissot Z and Maddam VF, both of whom hold special places in her heart. Maddam, acquired in 2021, embodies willingness and determination, while Tico, imported from the Netherlands in 2023, exudes a gentle and loving personality. Together, Alyssa and her four-legged partners navigate the journey of learning and growth, embracing the opportunities and challenges that come their way with gratitude and enthusiasm.

McKenna Gutierrez‘s journey in the equestrian world is deeply intertwined with her remarkable perseverance in overcoming learning disabilities. Diagnosed with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia, McKenna found solace and success in the equestrian realm, where she discovered a supportive environment that nurtured her growth. Transitioning from public school to homeschooling and online learning, she diligently pursued her education while working part-time jobs to contribute to her passion for horses. With unwavering determination, McKenna achieved top scores in her studies and dreams of competing at higher levels, fueled by her profound connection with her horse, Sparky. As she embarks on her path to becoming a psychologist, McKenna aims to utilize her experiences to empower and support others facing similar challenges, embodying the resilience and strength found within the equestrian community.

Manon Legrand‘s equestrian journey began at the age of 6, inspired by her sister and mother’s love for riding. Despite exploring various sports, horseback riding captured Manon’s heart like no other. Bonding over their shared passion, Manon and her mother spent countless hours at the barn together, fostering a special connection that continues to enrich their lives. While balancing her studies in veterinary medicine at the University of Montreal, Manon dedicates her summers to gaining practical experience at vet clinics and equine hospitals, laying the groundwork for her future specialization in equine sports medicine. Fosbury du Miral, her talented Selle Français gelding, entered her life in April 2023, becoming her partner in pursuit of higher levels in the equestrian world. With his unwavering bravery and generosity, Fosbury has already taught Manon valuable lessons, igniting her passion for progress and growth in the sport. Together, Manon and Fosbury embark on an exciting journey filled with promise and potential, united by their shared love for horses and dedication to excellence.

Jordan Warner‘s journey into the equestrian world began as a refuge from the challenges of bullying in school, leading her to discover a lifelong passion for horses. Despite dabbling in various sports, it was the connection with equines that captured her heart. Balancing her equestrian pursuits with a myriad of jobs since the age of 13, Jordan currently thrives as a NCCP Instructor and EC Registered coach at Belle Wood Equestrian in Pickering, while also excelling as a math tutor and administrative support. With aspirations of attending Seneca for their vet tech program and a dream of rehabilitating animals, Jordan’s dedication to equine welfare shines through. Her cherished horse, George, holds a special place in her heart, serving as her steadfast companion through life’s trials and triumphs. Additionally, Jordan finds inspiration and growth alongside BW Lagerfeld, affectionately known as Karl, as they navigate the world of show jumping together, forging a bond built on trust, perseverance, and mutual respect.

Colby Winther Konig‘s lifelong passion for riding began at home, where the barn in their backyard provided the perfect setting for immersing in the equestrian world. With a trainer for a mother, Colby’s journey through the A circuit in Canada and the USA has been marked by success and progression, from pony classes to medal finals and eventually to the 1.30m jumpers. Alongside their competitive pursuits, Colby works diligently at the barn, taking care of their own grooming at shows and embracing the hands-on aspect of horsemanship. Looking towards the future, Colby plans to pursue a degree in communications at university, with aspirations of delving into social media management, ideally within the realm of sports. Central to Colby’s equestrian journey is their cherished mount, Big Ticket, a 12-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding bred by Colby’s family. Together, Colby and Big Ticket have achieved significant milestones, culminating in victories at prestigious national finals, including winning both the CET Medal and JC Hunter Medal National Finals on him in 2023. With determination, skill, and a deep love for the sport, Colby Winther Konig embodies the spirit of a dedicated equestrian athlete poised for continued success on and off the showgrounds.

About the Jumping Youth Bursary
Each year, the Youth Bursary Committee selects recipients of the Jumping Youth Bursary program based on the strength of applications received. Elements considered in the application process include a transcript of grades and outline of academic curriculum; future educational plans; equestrian experience; commitment and dedication to their sport; a positive image within the sport; achievement of notable competition results, whether at the local, regional or national level; goals within the equestrian industry; and financial need.
