Vaulting is one of the oldest known forms of equestrian sport, often described as gymnastics on horseback. During performances, the horse is guided by a long rein controlled by a lunger. Team, Pas-de-Deux and Individual competitions are held where competitors are judged on their ability to smoothly execute compulsory movements demonstrating strength, flexibility, and balance while facing all four directions and covering all parts of the horse from neck to croup. They are then evaluated on the technical difficulty and artistic expression associated with a freestyle routine. A portion of every overall score also considers the horse’s quality and consistency of gait.
