Biosecurity
Biosecurity is a set of principles and practices that are used to reduce the risks posed by pathogens. Implementing strict biosecurity measures at active equine facilities, as well as competitions, is the best way to protect the health and welfare of Canada’s national herd from infectious disease.
National Biosecurity Standard for the Equine Sector
EC, in partnership with the CFIA and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), developed the National Farm and Facility Level Biosecurity Standard for the Equine Sector.
The Biosecurity Standard outlines simple ways to protect horses from disease and can be used by horse owners and custodians as a cost-effective way to limit the risk of a disease outbreak on farms and other facilities where horses may be kept. It can be adopted in its entirety or can supplement existing on-farm biosecurity programs.
