It is with sadness we reflect on the life of Albertan eventer Dr. Karen Nyrop, DVM, who passed away on January 1, 2024, at the age of 69 years. Winner of the 2023 USEA Ironmaster Award, Dr. Nyrop was a remarkable veterinarian and passionate horsewoman – a beacon of energy, courage, and unwavering dedication to the sport she loved.
Specializing in performance horse care with a focus on lameness, PPEs and exercise physiology, Dr. Nyrop was a graduate of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine and completed her large animal residency at Kansas State University. She practiced at a referral hospital in Scottsdale, AZ, before establishing her own practice. She joined Burwash Equine Services of Calgary, AB, in 2001 where she remained an associate for many years.
Her commitment to equine welfare extended to her role as an FEI veterinary delegate having served at the 1996 Olympic Games, the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games and countless FEI competitions including Kentucky Three-Day and Maryland 5* events. She was the Canadian Eventing Team Veterinarian at the 2019 FEI North American Youth Championships in Kalispell, MT and volunteered her time as a member of the USEA’s Equine Welfare and Research Committees and the USEF’s Veterinary Committee. In addition to facilitating performance horse table topics and task forces, Dr. Nyrop served as a member of the AAEP’s Educational Programs, Student Relations, and Foundation Advisory Committees.
When not practicing, she was an active amateur eventer who competed up to the Intermediate level and enjoyed pack trips through the Rocky Mountains. Dr. Nyrop will be remembered for a life lived with purpose and her passion as a highly respected veterinarian that cared deeply for her clients and emanated a love for both horses and equestrian sport. EC extends its condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
