In Memoriam of Canadian Equestrian Team Veterinarian, FEI Veterinary Delegate, Founding Member of the EC Equine Medication Control Committee Dr. Denys Frappier.
Equestrian Canada was deeply saddened learn of the passing of Dr. Denys Frappier, a pioneering equestrian sport veterinarian whose legacy will forever inspire and endure. Born in December 1938, Dr. Frappier’s journey began early when he became fascinated with horses at the age of five, sparking a lifelong dedication to the well-being of equines and the advancement of equestrian sport medicine.
Dr. Frappier’s career was marked by extraordinary achievements. Graduating with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Université de Montréal in 1970, he quickly became a leading authority in equine health and care. His expertise led him to serve as the Chief Veterinary Officer of the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, a testament to his commitment to the welfare of equine athletes. He went on to be the Canadian Equestrian Team Veterinarian at many major games between 1984-2004 including the Los Angeles (USA), Barcelona (SPA), Atlanta (USA), and Athens (GRE) Olympic Games; the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm (SWE), De Haag (NDR), and Rome(ITL); and the Pan American Games in Winnipeg (CAN).
Throughout his career, Dr. Frappier made significant contributions to the equestrian community, both nationally and internationally including holding a position of Foreign Veterinary Delegate with the FEI. He played a pivotal role in the EC Equine Medication Control Committee, serving as a founding member and later as president, demonstrating his steadfast dedication to promoting fair competition and ethical treatment of horses.
Dr. Frappier’s contributions extended beyond his veterinary practice. He was a mentor, educator, and advocate for responsible horsemanship. He had deep commitment to equine welfare and worked tirelessly to promote ethical treatment and proper care standards within the industry and across the globe.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Frappier’s philanthropic endeavors exemplified his compassionate spirit. His remarkable service at the American Fondouk hospital in Morocco, where he provided free veterinary care to countless animals, stands as a testament to his selflessness and dedication to improving the lives of both animals and their owners.
Equestrian Canada extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Frappier’s family, friends, and colleagues. His unparalleled contributions to the equestrian community will forever be remembered and cherished. In honor of his legacy, donations may be made to the American Fondouk, a cause that was near and dear to his heart, continuing his mission to make a positive impact on the lives of animals in need.
