What if my horses needs medication at an EC sanctioned competition?
Permitted medications may be present in a horse during an EC sanctioned competition, except for endurance competitions (refer to A1003.4). For a complete list of permitted medications see Chapter 10, Article 1003.
In cases of a medical emergency (acute illness or injury) requiring the administration of a drug (e.g. flunixin for colic), an Emergency Medication Report Form must be filled out and submitted in accordance with the form’s directives (Article A1005). Continuing the horse in competition must not be detrimental to the overall welfare of the horse nor accelerate the disease process and horses must not compete for 24 hours following treatment. Administration of a drug for shipping or clipping or for elective procedures such as dentistry is not considered acute or therapeutic.
Horse owners and veterinarians are advised to consult the equine medication control rules and the Schedule of Drugs available from the Canadian Pari-Mutuel Agency (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) for guidance on the administration of medication and drugs to horses competing at EC sanctioned competitions.
Riders and owners are further cautioned against the use of medicinal preparations, tonics, pastes, feeds, supplements, nutraceuticals or herbal products of any kind if the ingredients and quantitative analysis are not specifically known, as they may contain a drug that is not permitted for use in competition.
The Equine Medication Control Guide is a handy resource which provides information and practical advice to EC owners and veterinarians about the rules that pertain to the use of medications for horses competing at EC sanctioned competitions.
