The gang’s all here! The Canadian Show Jumping Team was all smiles preparing to greet fans at an autograph signing sponsored by BMO.
L to R: Kara Chad of Millarville, AB; Eric Lamaze of Wellington, FL; Chef d’Équipe, Mark Laskin of Langley, BC; Erynn Ballard of Tottenham, ON; and Mario Deslauriers of New York, NY.
Susan Bundy, the Director of Corporate Sponsorship for BMO Financial Group, found herself flanked by “Ians” – Canadian Olympian Ian Millar of Perth, ON, and Ian Allison, Senior Vice President of Spruce Meadows.
Ladies who lunch? We prefer ladies who jump!
L to R: Chair of the EC Jumping Committee, Pam Law; EC Manager of Jumping, Karen Hendry-Ouellette; FEI 2* Jumping and Eventing Judge and EC Senior Steward and Judge, Fran McAvity; Rocky Mountain Show Jumping Tournament Manger, Caroline Jones
Lima 2019 Pan American Games athlete, Lisa Carlsen of Okotoks, AB, had her eyes on the prize riding Parette (Passoa VDL x Barinello), her 13-year-old Brandenburg mare, in the $133,700 CANA Cup on Sept. 5.
Victory in the CANA Cup ultimately went to Eric Lamaze, the all-time money winner at Spruce Meadows, who piloted Chacco Kid Group’s 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding, Chacco Kid (Chacco Blue x Come On), to their place in the winner’s circle.
For Eric Lamaze, there’s nothing like winning a 1.60m competition against 50 top riders – and 14 in the jump-off! – to brighten your day.
The Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ was a family affair, with show jumper Ben Asselin (left) and his father, Canadian Olympian Jonathan Asselin (right) in attendance from Foothills, AB.
Spruce Meadows itself is a family operation, wholly owned and operated by the Southern family. Pictured are sisters, Linda (left) and Nancy (right) Southern.
The world-class competition also drew several couples for an action-packed date night, including Canadian Olympian Mac Cone of King City, ON, and his wife, Brenley Cone.
The ‘Masters’ was also a getaway for Mike and Emily Lawrence of Mono, ON.
Furrowed brows and fierce focus from Eric Lamaze and Kara Chad as they walked the course for the $530,000 BMO Nations Cup on Sept. 7.
The Canadian Show Jumping Team took second in the BMO Nations Cup, led by pathfinder Mario Deslauriers aboard the nine-year-old Hosteiner gelding Amsterdam 27 (Catoki X Acord II), owned by Wishing Well Farm LLC and Luja LLC.
The expert eyes of Mark Laskin and Ian Millar were trained on Team Canada from the ingate.
Anchor rider, Eric Lamaze, switched his ride from Chacco Kid to Coco Bongo (Caretino x Calido), a 14-year-old Rheinlander gelding owned by Artisan Farms and Torrey Pines Stable, for the Nations Cup competition.
The green and silver of Kara Chad’s medal looked great against her iconic red jacket while she gave a quick hug to former Canadian Show Jumping Team member, Kim Kirton.

Jocelyn Rhyno of Halifax, NS, went on a tear in Lexington, KY, from Aug. 4-11. There, she became the first Atlantic Canadian equestrian athlete to participate in three aspects of the pony championships: the USEF Pony Finals, USHJA Pony Hunter Derby Championship – East Coast and the Marshall & Sterling/USEF Pony Medal Finals. Jocelyn and her pony Bold Dream ultimately finished fourth in the USEF Pony Medal Final – congratulations, Jocelyn!
