- THC and CBD are prohibited substances as per the Equestrian Canada and CPMA equine medication control programs.
- It is illegal for any veterinarian to prescribe CBD or THC products to treat any animal.
- There are no products licensed for veterinary use that contain CBD. All CBD based products have to be considered as supplements, which are not held to the same quality control and content analysis as licensed veterinary products.
- It is impossible to issue elimination guidelines for products that contain CBD as there is very little scientific evidence and because CBD products are not licensed for use in horses.
- Because of THC’s psychotropic effects (mind, emotional, and behavior altering), the use of THC in horses could result in physical injuries to the horse or its rider/handler(s).
- Hemp products: for information please refer to “Hemp oil” fact sheet (July 31 2018).
Until December 31, 2019, written warnings will be issued if the presence of CBD is detected in equine medication control samples from a horse competing at an EC sanctioned competition, but the presence of THC will result in a class 2 infraction.
After December 31, 2019, the presence of CBD in equine medication control samples from a horse competing in an EC sanctioned competition will result in an infraction as will be determined by EMCC. The presence of THC will continue to be sanctioned as above.
