Aurora, ON native Nicole (Nikki) Walker made her debut on the European 5* Grand Prix stage Sunday, piloting her own Panter JVH to a thrilling third-place finish in the prestigious CSIO5* Hickstead King George V Gold Cup.
The Canadian duo delivered a masterclass during the jump-off. They blazed through the track and sat almost two seconds up on the winning pace, showing just how quick and clever the big-striding stallion has become. However, heartbreak struck at the end of the round when Panter JVH suffered an unfortunate slip on the turf heading to the final fence. The minor stumble disrupted their rhythm just enough to bring the final rail down, finishing on a quick four-fault score that secured them the third spot on the podium.
The class was won by Great Britain’s Robert Whitaker riding Equine America Vermento, who, first into the ring, rode a relatively conservative clean round to force the remaining four riders to chase him. Brazil’s Stephanie Maciera and Novak De Kalvarie secured second place as the only other combination to finish with zero faults in the jump-off. Walker’s phenomenal performance placed her right alongside the world’s elite.
“I am incredibly proud of Panter and his performances this week at Hickstead!” said Walker. “He is a dream to work with every day, and to develop with him on the world stage is a huge privilege. This was my very first European 5* Grand Prix. To finish on the podium is a dream come true! Many thanks to Panter who leaves me speechless, my groom Kyra Holmes who is unwaveringly dedicated, my trainer Gerry Mullins who came to Hickstead with so much experience of this venue (being a former Hickstead Grand Prix winner himself) and Ian Millar for giving me the opportunity to be a part of our incredibly talented team this week.”
Walker noted that the track proved to be every bit as demanding as expected. “After walking the course I thought it was going to be challenging. The double of ditches and double of gates are signature to Hickstead and came up very early in the course. The triple needed power and precision, or plain old scope! We were almost two seconds up on the time, and an unlucky slip to the last in the jump off caused 4 faults. Panter used to be a slower moving horse, so it’s great to see how he’s become clever turning in the jump offs and his massive stride is always an asset.”
Canadian Chef d’Équipe Ian Millar praised the collective strength and rising trajectory of the squad.
“We were so proud to get our Canadian invitation to the CSIO Nations Cup here at the iconic Hickstead jumping competition,” said Millar. “We came, and I would say we conquered! Nikki’s podium finish Sunday of course was fantastic, and our other riders presented extremely well — Amy Millar with one rail down and Kyle Timm with one rail down,” he continued. “We were in contention all the way. I feel so strongly about this team. I’m very, very proud. And we are developing depth and at the same time we’re getting good results.”
Following his spectacular European breakout, Panter JVH is heading home to Canada for a well-deserved break. “Panter gets a holiday back in his paddock in Canada after this,” Walker added. “He will do lots of trail riding over the next few weeks to keep him fit and let him freshen up after giving such an amazing effort all week.”

This outstanding weekend caps off an incredible week for Team Canada across the globe. It follows a brilliant podium finish in Thursday’s historic CSIO5* Agria Nations Cup at Hickstead, alongside fantastic performances by North American-based riders at the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival in Traverse City, MI. Highlighting the action in Michigan, Sean Jobin celebrated his birthday in style by piloting Arkuga to a spectacular victory in the $116,500 B&D Builders CSIO3* Grand Prix Saturday, while top-ranked Canadian rider Erynn Ballard (currently in 25th overall on the Longines FEI rankings) had dominant, top-tier results throughout the week across a range of mounts.
With momentum at a high, the Canadian show jumping team will now channel this success into their final preparations for the upcoming FEI World Championships, taking place in Aachen, Germany from August 11–23.
