As we near the middle of summer, now is a great time to evaluate the condition of your pastures. Rotational Grazing
Most pastures consist of what we call “cool season” grasses. These grass varieties thrive when temperatures are 60°F and 80°F and growth slows in the summer when temperatures rise. When this occurs, horses may graze faster than the grass grows, leading to overgrazing. To avoid this problem, rotate the paddocks where horses are turned out, giving the grass adequate time to rest. Six weeks of rest is recommended during the summer months.
Mowing
Mowing helps control the rapid growth of weeds, which can quickly overtake your pasture. Weeds compete with grass for both space and nutrients and will take over if you are not properly managing your grass through routine mowing. Mowing grass to a height of four inches three to four times per year is typically considered ideal.

Soil Testing
Soil pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline the soil is. This is especially important for maintaining healthy and nutrient-rich grass. If soil pH is below 6.0, it is suggested to apply lime. Additionally, nitrogen fertilizer, phosphorus, or potassium may be needed depending on the results of your soil test. Working with your local Soil and Water Conservation District office can give you the information and guidance needed.
Harrowing and Manure Management
Occasionally dragging your paddocks is a great way to help break up manure piles. In addition to helping reduce parasite populations, it also helps distribute nutrients back into the grass.
